The President’s Hat

The President’s Hat, by Antoine Laurain, was one of our book club reads. This book was originally published in French and translated to English. It’s a short and sweet story about a hat, originally owned by the French president, that makes its way throughout France, worn by different people. There is something special about the hat that changes the lives of each new wearer.

The President’s Hat is a quick read. It’s not something that I would choose myself, which is why I like book club-the host chooses the book. It jumps to different narrators based on who owns the hat. It kept me on the hook wondering just what was it about the hat that seemed to make the wearer better, and I found myself rooting for each character. Though it’s short, I never felt like it was rushed. The author was very descriptive in each scene, and I could almost taste the oysters and white wine that Daniel, one of the main characters, loved so much.

Wine Pairing: Pouilly-Fuissé

Daniel loved his Pouilly-Fuissé paired with his seafood platter, and the author described it in such great detail that I felt like I had a glass too! Pouilly-Fuissé is a French white wine made from Chardonnay grapes. It’s fruity but also spicy and oaky. I personally love an oaky Chardonnay, but I know it’s not for everyone. You can pick up a bottle at your local Piggly Wiggly (for those in the South) for $23.99. A bit of a splurge for wine night, but well worth it.

If you’re looking for something short and easy to read, pour a glass of Pouilly-Fuissé, and grab The President’s Hat.
